FAST: aftermath

So, I ended the latest fast at 5.5 days.

I had blood work done Monday morning, in advance of my doctor appointment Wednesday. I was feeling very lightheaded after the seven vials were drawn, to the point that I drove home instead of to work.

I erred in a few ways. I stopped off to get some nuts at Trader Joes. I got them…but I also bought a ton of crap (protein bars, CLIF bars, granola bars, candy bars, pumpkin spice cake, carrot cake whoopie pies…) Once I decided to eat something, I started with good intentions but left the store with a ridiculous amount of junk. All for the want of some nuts.

My brain made every excuse in the book to push for carby, sugary junk. I won’t eat it today. It’s Pumpkin Spice season. At least sample that; it’s new. and so on.

In the end, I didn’t make it the full half hour after eating some nuts before I dipped into the pastries.  over the next few hours I ate a ridiculous amount, before I tossed half a cake and the remaining cheesecake pies into the trash and dumped them down the complex chute. I kept the unopened boxes of bars, but handed them off to my wife this morning. The singles I split between yesterday and today. They’re now all gone.

Before I reached the doctor I did a final weigh-in: 440.2, no change from the day before. Sunday had been a down day; I didn’t move much, and I included several ounces of olive oil in the day. I’m sure, if I’d made it through Monday still fasting, I’d have dropped into the 430s. But it’s now a goal for the next fast.

This morning? 449. I was glad I didn’t push into the 450s again, but was a bit surprised I’d gained so much in a day. But I expected a big gain; all the water I drank seemed to be sticking around, and I slept poorly. I woke at 5am with cramps in my right leg and dry mouth.

So…another lesson learned. Or a variation on the same lesson. When the temptations hit, DON’T GO SHOPPING. Especially alone.

My blood and urine work was done while fasting, though. I’m curious to see the results.

My intent today is to start a new fast at 4pm, which starts in just a few minutes. I ate a lot of bacon, boiled eggs, bell peppers, and kimchi. I also had some Clif bars, which wasn’t a great choice, but I wanted to not have anything on hand (except eggs/fat) when I started.
